More Info

Chris Rock: Brooklyn-raised Chris Rock is one of the most acclaimed and popular stand-up comics ever to take up the mic. His work has earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards and three Grammy Awards, as well as numerous accolades for his film and television roles. He’s the only comedian who could win a Grammy for a raunchy stand-up special, and star in a hugely successful animated family film franchise; and he’s coming to a venue near you.

Rock’s stand-up career began in New York City circa 1984, when he began climbing the ladder at Catch a Rising Star comedy clubs. Soon, Rock was headlining all kinds of night clubs and comedy bars when he caught the attention of the most popular stand-up comedian of the era: Eddie Murphy. Murphy began mentoring Rock, eventually giving him his first film role in Beverly Hills Cop II.

After further building his reputation through stand-up and small television and movie roles, Rock was cast on Saturday Night Live for the show’s 1990 season. Along with fellow newcomers David Spade, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and Rob Schneider, Rock became known as one of the “Bad Boys of SNL,” propelling him to the next level of stardom.

Upon leaving SNL, Rock flexed his acting skills in the film CB4, which Rock starred in and wrote. He released his first HBO comedy special, Big Ass Jokes, in 1994, but scored an even bigger hit with his 1996 HBO special, Bring the Pain; the latter would bring him his first two Emmy wins. However, the success of his first two specials paled in comparison to the recognition he received for 1999’s Bigger & Blacker. Rock finally achieved the success experienced by his mentor Eddie Murphy with the special that combined stand-up, skits, and music videos, and featured numerous celebrity cameos.

Rock continued to act in movies, most notably starring in Down to Earth, Osmosis Jones, Bad Company, and Head of State. In 2005, he began voicing Marty in Dreamworks hit Madagascar franchise, as well as debuting his hit show Everybody Hates Chris, which he created, wrote, and produced. After stepping out of the limelight for a few years, he returned in 2015 with the critically acclaimed film Top Five, which was loosely based on his own experiences with fame as a stand-up comedian.
